The Legend of Skanda Sashti

The fast of Skanda Shashthi is dedicated to Lord Kartikeya, the son of Shiva-Parvati. According to the scriptures, the festival of Skanda Shashti is celebrated for six days. In North India, the son of Shiva-Parvati is called Kartikeya, while in South India he is known as Murugan.

Kartikeya is specially worshipped in the southern provinces of Tamilnadu, Kerala etc. It is also called Skanda Shashthi Puja. Skanda Sashti is observed to celebrate the birth of Murugan and the destruction of Asuras.


By worshipping him on Skanda Sashti, he removes the sufferings of the devotees and gives them wisdom. All the devotees gather in large numbers in this six-day festival. Processions are also taken out in many places.

The celebration of Lord Murugan celebrated as Skanda Sashti also lasts for 6 days. Many temples have 6 headed idols of Lord Murugan. Lord Murugan is the lord of 6 powers. Apart from this, Lord Murugan is also the lord of the 6 senses. In the worship of Kartikeya, people should also read the Skanda Sashti Vrat Katha on the day of Skanda Shashthi.
